RTC Europe 2016
Vision 20/20 Competition!

Alfandega Centro de Congressos, Porto, Portugal
Thursday 20 - Saturday 22 October 2016
Dear Patrick,
Less than a month to go for RTC Europe 2016! This also means there's less than a month to get submitting for the Vision 20/20 competition, proudly sponsored by CADLearning. What is the Vision 20/20 competition, you may ask? Last year we ran this competition under the name PechaKucha style compeititon. This competition is where the submitter puts together a PowerPoint presentation consisting of 20 slides that display for 20 seconds each that gives insight into where our industry is heading or where it should go. This year's topic is "Big Data". This is a hot topic, but how can we make the data available to us, useful in the AECO industry?
FOCUS OF YOUR SUBMISSION
What do you need to think about? If you're keen on submitting an entry, you should think of this as an abstract proposal, or more so a live abstract proposal. The reason being, the winner of this competition gets to present this as a class at RTC Europe 2017 and the prize package includes your registration and 5 nights' accommodation.
JUDGING PANEL

There are two parts to the judging process for this competition. Once all the submissions are in, the European Committee will review these in order to determine the top three finalists. Look out for a gold star on your badge, this gold star indicates you are one of our top 3 finalists.
If you're a finalist, you'll then get your chance to present your submission live to your fellow delegates on the 22nd of October, starting at 4:15pm. After all three finalists have presented, the delegates will vote. The winner will be announced later that evening during the Gala Dinner, each finalist wins a prize 2nd prize is a HTC Vive Virtual Reality Headset and 3rd is €300 visa pre-paid card.
FORMAT OF YOUR SUBMISSION
If you plan on submitting an entry towards this competition, you need to keep the following format in mind:
  • File format: PowerPoint (PPT or PPTX)
  • Resolution: Landscape 1920x1080
  • Slides: 20 images
  • Time: 20 seconds (6 minutes and 40 seconds in total)
  • Audio: Please record an audio of your presentation for the first round of submissions. This can either be included in your PowerPoint file or as a separate .wav file. This audio is to assist the RTC Europe committee in reviewing your submission. Once reviewed, the audio file will be removed as you'll have the chance to present your submission, if you're a finalist.
  • Please note: no identifying information within the presentation is allowed.

WHO CAN SUBMIT?
The Vision 20/20 competition is open to all RTC Europe 2016 delegates excluding sponsors, exhibitors and re-sellers.
Whether you've been a speaker in the past or have presented at any of the RTC conferences in recent times, this is a great opportunity for you to get involved and submit a 'live abstract' on Big Data. It's time to step out of your comfort zone and get involved, you never know you might end up being a speaker for RTC Europe 2017.

SUBMIT NOW
The RTC Europe committee and I look forward to reviewing your submissions and welcoming you to Porto in just a few weeks' time!
Kind Regards,

Wesley Benn

Why You Should Attend?

Alfandega Centro de Congressos, Porto, Portugal
Thursday 20 - Saturday 22 October 2016
Dear Patrick,
Wow, what a year it has been! We are headed to the final quarter of the year and along with it, the final RTC Event for 2016 which will be held in Porto, Portugal. As of tomorrow, we are exactly 10 weeks away from making our way to Porto.
RTC Europe is going to be a jam-packed 3 days with great sessions and a fantastic line-up of speakers, all individually selected from the record number of abstracts that were submitted. We have sessions from speakers who have made their way to the list of top 10 speakers, based on feedback from our past delegates. Some of these include HÃ¥vard Vasshaug, Marcello Sgambelluri, Margarida Barbosa and many more! You can find more information on the schedule here and a list of speakers here.
In collaboration with CADLearning and Ascent we’ve also organised for certification exams. As a RTC Europe delegate you have the chance to take a certification exam for FREE. There are slots available throughout the conference with the first exam sessions taking place on the Wednesday, so be rest assured, you will be able to find a slot to suit your schedule.

  • Do you want to learn about the ease of implementation of sloped framing and how global parameters can support you in your workflow?
  • Would you like to find out how to reach MEP collaboration nirvana?
  • Learn about all the exciting ways Dynamo can support you and how to utilise it to harness the performance data in your models?
  • Learn how to create schedule fields that calculate the line items percentage in a Revit schedule, strategies for quick deployment of specific tools, API best practices, and urban planning workflows that work!
  • Stay on top of recent technological developments and learn how desktop applications and utilities can interact with cloud based services like Forge.
  • See the exciting possibilities for generative design using Project Fractal.
  • Learn hands-on how to experience true collaboration applying Integrated BIM and make information management a key priority.
  • Experience all the exciting Reality Capture Technologies for design, planning and construction applications.
And if all that wasn’t enough, this year for the very first time we are bringing the Building Content Summit (BCS) to Europe. This will take place on Wednesday 19th October preceding RTC Europe. At BCS you will have the opportunity to raise your voice and let manufacturers and content creators know what you need to see in manufacturers BIM content.
REGISTER NOW
Today’s world is constantly on the move, and the rate at which it’s changing is so profound that you can’t trust your eyes to show you reality, because what you perceive as reality is actually already history. The presentations you will see at RTC Europe 2016 will challenge the assumptions about the world we live in and the future we’re heading for by carefully examining the significance of global trends.
You’ll discover how these trends affect and will continue to affect our personal and professional lives, our children, and even our definition of intelligence. You will experience a sense of how we can come to realise the long-term benefits of adapting to our current state of societal progress, and how our world will ultimately benefit.
You'll be amazed at the difference three days can make. For more detail, visit www.rtcevents.com/rtc2016eur and register today!

Managing Curtain Walls in Assemble Systems

Curtain Wall families in Revit are indicated by 3 dashed lines at the perimeter of the system. Each Curtain Wall system contains multiple components: Curtain Panels, Curtain Mullions and the boundary condition of the overall Wall System. Upon publishing to Assemble, a Curtain Wall System is represented in Assemble graphically displaying the Curtain Panel and Curtain Mullion components. The boundary condition for the overall Curtain Wall system is not supported, but the summary Quantity is published in the Walls Category. This document outlines how to manage Curtain Walls in Assemble.

Figure 1: Curtain Wall System highlighted in Revit 2015.
Figure 2: Curtain Panel (a singular component in the Curtain Wall system above) and Curtain Mullion (at right).
The following workflow can help the VDC/BIM Manager, communicate the various curtain wall quantities and their relationship to the estimator.
Step 1:  Create a View of the Curtain Panels, Curtain Mullions and Curtain Wall.
Select all Curtain Panels and Curtain Mullions. Choose the Door families labeled Curtain Panel or Storefront. Finally choose all families in the Walls category labeled Curtain Wall. Then choose Hide Others from the Selection Bar.

Step 3: Group the View by Host ID
  1. Click on the Dropdown next to Group by in the Model Inventory header.

  1. Click Create New Grouping to make the following Grouping:

Step 4: Save the View
  1. Click on the Save button to save changes and name your new view.

Step 4: Review the quantities for Curtain Panels and Curtain Walls
  1. Now in the Curtain Wall View, you can associate the total square feet of Walls: Curtain Wall: Storefront with the Curtain Panels and Doors that have the same Host name of Storefront. In this example the total area of the Curtain Panel labeled Storefront is 7865.69 SF and the total area of Curtain Wall doors is 402.50 SF for a total of 8,268.19 SF (See Figure 4 for details). The corresponding calculations of Walls: Curtain Wall Storefront is 9,321.10 as it represents the total area of the system, including Curtain Panels and Curtain Mullions. Assemble displays both values so that you understand the overall area of a system and the area of just panels or the lineal ft of just mullions.
NOTE: The Walls Category is a redundant quantity and does not display in the VIewer. It represents the total area for a particular system type. Curtain Panel and Curtain Mullions have quantities associated with their geometry individually. Both are displayed at the request of our customers and provide you with two ways to view the same information.
